Try losing some weight. Getting into shape has many benefits. If you are on the heavier side and suffering from sleep apnea, you may find that slimming down helps with that as well. Studies have found that overweight and obese individuals are more likely to find relief from sleep apnea by getting themselves to a healthier weight.

There are three different types of sleep apnea. Obstructive, central, and complexes are all forms of sleep apnea. You need to go to the doctor and have a professional assess which type of sleep apnea you have, so they can offer the best treatment and advice for your specific condition.

If you suffer from sleep apnea, get your allergy and sinus problems treated. Sleep apnea causes enough difficulty breathing on its own. You do not need anything else reducing your ability to get air while you sleep. Keeping your airways clear and free by properly treating nasal issues can help you sleep better at night.

You can try nasal sprays if your sleep apnea is caused by your nasal passages. This product should help clear your airways for a night or two. Avoid using nasal sprays over a long period of time; your mucus membranes could become damaged and irritated. Visit a pharmacy to find a variety of ways of keeping your nose clear as you sleep.

If you think that you may have sleep apnea, set up a video of yourself as you sleep. Just be sure that the video recorder has sound capability. When you wake up, look at the video, and if it seems like something other than snoring is going on, it may be time to go to the doctor.

Left untreated, sleep apnea may get progressively worse. Some things work for people and some do not. Losing weight will help minimize symptoms in many patients, but sleep apnea can occur in very thin individuals as well as those who are overweight.

Some other options include CPAP machines or other devices. Some people do prefer surgery over any other types of sleep apnea alleviation methods. It doesn't matter which treatment you get, as long as it is effective for you and helps you find the quality of life you are missing.

When you get your sleep apnea diagnosis and the doctor gives you a CPAP machine, be determined to stick with CPAP therapy. It can be a real adjustment getting used to sleeping with a mask on your face every night. However, your life and health depend on it. So tell yourself this is not optional, and set your mind on making it work.

While it is common sense to avoid some things before sleeping, like caffeine, many people load up their plates and then go to bed. This is not healthy in general and can worsen sleeping issues like apnea. Avoid eating any heavy meals before going to bed and you will find yourself sleeping better.

Part of treating sleep apnea is working on exercises that open up the airways to get more air in. A great way to do this is by playing wind instruments, like the clarinet or the flute. Consistently doing this strengthens the throat muscles and opens up the airways as well.

Talk to a doctor. When you have sleep apnea, you must be sure to see a physician. This is because only a doctor can tell you which treatments are right for you. If you wait, you may find yourself in dire straits as well as feeling confused. See a doctor right away so you can treat your condition.

If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, one of the simplest ways to improve your condition is to cut back on the amount of alcohol that you drink, especially before bedtime. Drinking alcohol causes throat muscles to relax and block off your throat, making it much more difficult to breathe.

Avoid sleeping pills and cold medicines if you suffer with sleep apnea. Taking anything that makes you drowsy will also relax the muscles of the airway passage and this can cause blockages and interruptions. Try getting into a solid routine that will prepare your mind and body for sleep instead.

If you have think you might have sleep apnea or already suffer from snoring, try to use some over the counter nasal strips. These small strips attach to your nose with adhesive, lifting open your nasal passages. If your sleep apnea is related to a nasal obstruction, the strips may improve the quality of your sleep.

If you are like most people who suffer from sleep apnea, you lie on your back when sleeping. Sleeping on your back will make it much easier for your tongue and tissues in your throat to obstruct your airway and cause obstructive sleep apnea. Even though you may try to remedy this issue by falling asleep while lying on your side, you'll probably roll onto your back not long after you falling asleep.

To keep from rolling onto your back, use pillows to prop you up so you remain sleeping on your side. If using pillows doesn't keep you sleeping on your side, place a small rubber ball into a sock and stitch it to the rear of your sleep shirt. If you try to roll onto your back, this ball will feel very uncomfortable to you, and you can soon "program" yourself to sleep through the night, while lying on your side.

Sleep apnea is a condition that can really mess with your sleep. With sleep being as important as it is, you don't want anything interrupting it. Use the tips shared in this article and you can be on your way to a peaceful night's sleep, even if you are dealing with sleep apnea
